Regenerative Thermal Oxidation (RTO) is a well-established and widely used technology for the control of volatile organic compounds (VOC). Catalytic Oxidation is a technology that uses a catalyst to oxidize VOC at a lower temperature than RTO. The reaction occurs at temperatures ranging from 400-800¡ãF. The catalyst lowers the activation energy required for the oxidation reaction to occur, reducing the operating temperature of the system. The catalyst is typically made of noble metals, such as platinum or palladium, which are deposited on high-temperature-resistant materials, such as ceramics or metals.
The advantages of Catalytic Oxidation include lower operating temperatures, lower capital costs, and applicability to low VOC concentrations. Because of the lower operating temperatures, Catalytic Oxidation requires less energy consumption than RTO. Additionally, Catalytic Oxidation systems have lower capital costs than RTO systems because of their lower operating temperatures and the absence of heat recovery systems. Lastly, Catalytic Oxidation systems are applicable to low VOC concentrations because they can operate at lower temperatures than RTO systems.
The limitations of Catalytic Oxidation include the need for catalyst replacement and reduced destruction efficiency due to catalyst poisoning. Catalysts require replacement after a certain period of operation, depending on the type of catalyst used and the operating conditions. Additionally, the catalysts can be poisoned by impurities in the process stream, reducing the destruction efficiency of the system. The catalyst poisoning can result in a reduction in the system’s destruction efficiency and require frequent catalyst replacement, increasing the operating costs of the system.
