A recuperative thermal oxidizer is a type of air pollution control device that uses high temperatures to convert hazardous air pollutants into non-hazardous substances. The RTO technology is based on the principle of thermal oxidation, where VOCs are oxidized by heating them to a high temperature in the presence of oxygen. The process converts VOCs into carbon dioxide and water vapor, which are then released into the atmosphere.
The RTO consists of two heat exchangers that preheat the incoming polluted air with the outgoing clean air. The preheated air is then directed into the combustion chamber, where it is mixed with natural gas or propane. The mixture is ignited, and the temperature is maintained between 815¡ãC to 980¡ãC. The high temperature causes the VOCs to oxidize and break down into their constituent components. The hot combustion gases are then directed into the second heat exchanger, where they transfer the heat to the incoming polluted air, further preheating it before it enters the oxidizer. This heat exchange process helps in reducing the operating cost of the RTO, as it saves energy and reduces the amount of fuel needed to maintain the temperature.
