The operation of RTOs involves three stages: preheating, combustion, and cooling. In the preheating stage, the ceramic material in one chamber absorbs heat from the outlet stream, preheating the inlet stream. In the combustion stage, the preheated inlet stream is heated to a temperature of 760¡ãC (1400¡ãF) or higher, causing the pollutants to oxidize and break down into harmless compounds such as water vapor and carbon dioxide. In the cooling stage, the outlet stream is cooled by the heat-absorbing ceramic material in the other chamber, and the purified air is released into the atmosphere.
