What is an RTO Thermal Oxidizer?

An RTO thermal oxidizer, or regenerative thermal oxidizer, is a type of air pollution control system that is commonly used to eliminate volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) from industrial exhaust streams. This technology utilizes a high-temperature combustion process to break down these harmful gases into carbon dioxide and water vapor, which can then be safely released into the atmosphere.

How Does an RTO Thermal Oxidizer Work?

An Oxydateur thermique RTO

works through a process called thermal oxidation. The system consists of a combustion chamber, a heat exchanger, and a control system. Process exhaust gases are first preheated in a heat exchanger before they enter the combustion chamber. In the combustion chamber, the gases are heated to a temperature of around 1,400-1,600 degrees Fahrenheit through the use of natural gas or propane burners. This high-temperature environment causes the VOCs and HAPs to break down into carbon dioxide and water vapor. The clean gases are then cooled in the heat exchanger before being released into the atmosphere.
